Pandemic Money Will Go to 4.5 Percent Teacher Bonuses
Teachers and other district employees of San Diego Unified will be getting a one-time 4.5 percent pay bump next year, according to a tentative agreement between the district and teachers union. The deal also includes $10,000 signing bonuses for special education teachers and nurses. That means any new hire in special education, or any teacher who transfers to special education, will qualify for the $10k.

At this Oakland high school, restorative justice goes far beyond discipline
Five years ago, Fremont High in East Oakland had some of the highest discipline rates and lowest attendance in the city. Fights and conflicts were common occurrences. Only 1 in 4 graduates were qualified to attend public college in California. One in 3 dropped out entirely. But Fremont High is – literally – a different place now. With a newly rebuilt campus and an intensive focus on improving campus climate, Fremont has seen its enrollment jump 20% even as districtwide enrollment has dropped, and the number of students who qualify for college admission has nearly tripled.

Most states, including California, have improved their reports on students’ attendance at school, a significant leap forward after Covid disrupted attendance-taking nationwide, according to a study released this week by Attendance Works. Forty-four of the 46 states that participated in the survey said they now require that schools take daily attendance for in-person instruction. That’s up from 31 states that required it last year, when many schools were either remote or operating in a hybrid model.
