OC Board of Ed Trustee Beckie Gomez faces lawsuit over concurrent elected positions |
Orange County Board of Education Trustee Rebecca “Beckie” Gomez is facing a legal challenge regarding her elected seat. Santa Ana resident and GOP Assembly candidate Mike Tardif filed a lawsuit last month seeking to remove Gomez from the OCBE because she is also simultaneously serving on the Tustin City Council. Her council post is “unlawfully incompatible” with her work on the OCBE, the lawsuit alleged. It seeks to have her forfeit her OCBE post because she was more recently elected to the city council.
Gomez, often the lone dissenting voice on the OCBE, declined to comment on the lawsuit but said she plans to publicly address it when the board convenes Wednesday for a regularly-scheduled meeting.

Bill would give $25,000 to aspiring school counselors, social workers |
Bailey Adling would stay up some days until 3 a.m. studying for his master’s degree in school counseling, and then wake up at 7 a.m. to work a full day as a substitute teacher. He was so exhausted he often considered dropping out of the program.
While Priscilla Park was enrolled full-time in her graduate school counseling program, she taught school during the day and gave up her social life, while still paying off her six-figure undergraduate loans.

Alameda school bond narrowly trailing |
A $298 million school bond in Alameda, an East Bay city known for its strong support of public schools, is trailing by a narrow margin, according to the East Bay Times.
Measure B needs 55% of the vote to pass, but as of late last week had only garnered 53.5%. The bond would pay for classroom upgrades, modernizing older buildings, new plumbing, accessibility improvements and other upgrades at the district’s 16 schools.

Advocates of a multibillion-dollar model for California schools criticize a rocky rollout |
After successfully pushing for a multibillion-dollar program to infuse high-poverty schools with an array of services, United Ways of California is urging state lawmakers to split with Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom and tap the breaks on its expansion, pointing to “issues that have plagued this program since day one.” In a surprising twist, the same group that lobbied for the model just last year is now pleading with budget staffers in the Legislature to pass on Newsom’s request for $1.5 billion more in funding for the “community schools” approach, United Ways Public Policy Manager Jose Vargas told POLITICO Friday. |
