COVID-19 funding pries open a door to improving air quality in schools
Many schools in California and nationwide were in dire need of upgrades — burdened by leaking pipes, mold, and antiquated heating systems — long before the pandemic drew attention to the importance of indoor ventilation in reducing the spread of infectious disease. The average U.S. school building is 50 years old, and many schools date back more than a century. So, one might assume school districts across the nation would welcome the opportunity created by billions of dollars in federal COVID-relief money available to upgrade heating and air-conditioning systems and improve air quality and filtration in K-12 schools.

Insults didn’t deter student rep to Chino Valley Unified school board
Esther Kim wasn’t naïve when she was named student representative to the Chino Valley Unified school board, whose brand is to wage culture-war battles over sex ed, gay marriage, the Bible, prayer, masking and vaccinations. “I did Google searches. They helped me out a lot,” Esther tells me with a laugh. “I knew what I was getting into.” An early test came in November when the board’s two religious conservatives sought to limit the rights of transgender students. Esther mobilized students via Instagram to speak at the meeting and collected advance testimony from more than 160. The motion failed. It was a win for students, but at an emotional price.

Fresno County needs more college graduates. How high school teachers hope to fix that
By this summer, over 100 high school teachers will be eligible to teach dual enrollment courses across California’s central San Jaoquin Valley, thanks to a two-year pilot program aimed at creating equity between rural and urban schools. The Upskilling Teachers’ Master’s Program Pathway started in the Fresno area and is funded by a little over $1.5 million from the Fresno-Madera K-16 Collaborative, paying for high school teachers to earn their master’s degrees to teach college classes at their campuses.

It has been estimated that the state needs 7,000 to 15,000 more TK teachers by then, said Mary Sandy, executive director of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
