Traveling art exhibit showcases the work of artists with disabilities of all ages
Surrounded by his biggest supporters, 7-year-old Mario Roblero stands proudly in front of his artwork that is currently on display at Galería of Imagination. With a brown border, the student artist from Thomas Paine Elementary School in the Garden Grove Unified School District painted a picture of a tree with blue, yellow and purple leaves. He titled his piece “The Tree.” It was among 350 pieces selected for the 46th annual VSA Festival, which was held in late April to celebrate the artistic achievements of individuals with disabilities.

County passes trio of gun control and school safety measures
Weeks after a Texas school shooting again placed gun violence in the spotlight, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved a trio of items aimed at improving school safety and regulating gun sales.The board also unanimously voted in favor of proposals to use county funding to improve school security for smaller districts without the resources to afford it, and to support a program called “Camp LEAD” that addresses social issues and introduces high school students to law enforcement officers.

Riverside schools honor 30 English learners as 2022 Legacy Scholars
Thirty Riverside students who learned English were saluted as Legacy Scholars during a spring ceremony. It was the Riverside Unified School District’s first in-person ceremony for program students since 2019. The Legacy Program was created to support the academic needs of English Learners in the district, a news release states. It aims to boost the number of English Learners who complete the 15 required courses for admission to the University of California and Cal State universities, known as the A–G requirements.

Riverside schools honor 2022 Heritage Scholars
Nearly 200 Heritage Scholars were saluted this spring in the Riverside Unified School District. The Heritage Program, which began in the 2013-14 school year, recognizes Black students who completed the A-G requirements needed to attend University of California and California State universities.

Los Angeles Unified's proposed budget focuses on student achievement
Los Angeles Unified’s new superintendent is proposing directing an additional $1.9 billion to targeted investments next school year as the district continues to push to close achievement gaps, focus on student wellness and invest in staff for the 2022-23 academic year. District officials provided a snapshot of new investments for the proposed $18.5 billion budget Tuesday ahead of its expected adoption next week.

Deputies called after tense board meeting turns physical in Fresno County
Sheriff’s deputies were called to West Park Elementary School after tensions at a board meeting turned physical on Monday, The Fresno Bee reported. The school in rural Fresno County has experienced high staff turnover, including having three different superintendents since December 2021. Parents have voiced their lack of confidence in school leadership, including the fact that board president Kimberly Vivenzi is married to board trustee Mark Vivenzi.
