Sylvia Mendez shares her family’s legacy with OCDE alternative education students
At 9 years old, Sylvia Mendez attended court trials with her family to fight school segregation in her community, and at 86, she continues to share her story with Orange County students who have faced obstacles of their own. Addressing a virtual audience of alternative education students and educators from the Orange County Department of Education, Mendez spoke on her family’s legacy and her role as an advocate for students of future generations as a distinguished guest in the Careers Without Borders speaker series on Thursday, March 9.

Winds, rain, flooding close dozens of schools serving more than 100,000 students in California
California’s 11th atmospheric river storm, whose stiff winds and pelting rain downed electric lines, churned mudslides and sent rivers and streams over their banks, also shut down at least 178 schools serving 102,000 students, the California Department of Education reported. Wednesday’s total may include additional schools, once the closure numbers are in from Southern California, which felt the tail end of the storm into Wednesday.

A Planned 3-Day Strike Will Shutdown LAUSD, The Nation's Second Largest School District. It Starts March 21
The union that represents school staff members employed by the Los Angeles Unified School District rallied in downtown Los Angeles for a new and better contract Wednesday.And now we have the dates for a planned 3-day strike: March 21, 22 and 23. If that strike takes place it will shut down the nation's second largest school district.

Layoffs spark rifts at struggling southeast San Diego charter school
A financially strapped charter school in southeast San Diego laid off employees to help address a nearly $1 million deficit, but some are now raising concerns about its leadership and how the cuts were decided. Officials at America’s Finest Charter School, which serves students from transitional kindergarten through 12th grade, say enrollment declines prompted a drop in funding and a warning from outside finance officials that cash would run out by winter.

Union announces Tuesday strike date against LAUSD
A new round of negotiations to attempt to avert a three-day strike that would force closure of Los Angeles Unified School District schools is set to begin Friday with Superintendent Alberto Carvalho saying the district is prepared to improve its offer. District officials said last week that Carvalho had made the Service Employees International Union Local 99 "one of the strongest offers ever proposed by a Los Angeles Unified superintendent."

LAUSD superintendent asks union leaders to negotiate before striking
A Unified School District Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho said he will meet at any time with Service Employees International Union leaders, who have threatened to strike over hourly pay and benefits. “I will make myself available day and night to solve this issue and prevent a strike,” Carvalho said Wednesday at LAUSD headquarters in downtown LA, hours before SEIU members were scheduled to rally. “Let it not be written or said that if a strike happens, it’s because we were not willing to do everything we could to avoid it.”

Marin education panel denies Novato charter petition appeal
A Marin education panel voted unanimously Tuesday to deny an appeal from a charter school that is seeking to locate in southern Novato. The Marin County Board of Education voted 5 to 0, with board members Clairette Wilson and Greg Knell absent, to deny the appeal and uphold a Nov. 29 decision by Novato Unified School District to deny the petition for Healy charter school.
