Q&A: Student arts programs poised to expand with Measure 28 funding |
Helping students succeed from K-12 to college and beyond has been a priority for Orange County educators, and with funding from Measure 28, opportunities to learn through the arts may further expand on school campuses. Through the state’s efforts to promote arts education, the Arts and Music in Schools Funding Guarantee and Accountability Act, or Measure 28, was passed in November of last year and allocates 1 percent — or roughly $941 million — of the general fund every year to K-12 arts programs throughout California. |

Advocates propose an alternative to refocus budget on Black students |
Gov. Gavin Newsom’s plan to increase funding to high-poverty schools represents what critics say is a broken promise to tackle a stubborn achievement gap for Black students. Black in School, a coalition of Black education and civil rights groups, has come up with a counterproposal that would provide additional funding for Black students. The group says the alternative would be compatible with Proposition 209, which bans affirmative action, and the Newsom administration’s effort to hold districts and schools accountable for spending. |

LAUSD superintendent tells families to prepare for school closures from worker strike |
Los Angeles Unified Schools will likely close if union workers in the district go through with a three-day strike, Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said in an email to families, according to the Los Angeles Times. It’s not yet clear what days the potential strike would be, but that will be announced Wednesday at a rally in downtown Los Angeles. The strike would be led led by Local 99 of Service Employees International, whose 30,000 workers include bus drivers, custodians and cafeteria workers. The union representing teachers in the district, United Teachers Los Angeles, has also told its members they should walk out in solidarity with those employees, the Times reported. |

California high school students increasingly criticize each others’ politics, race, sexuality |
The angry and sometimes violent speech expressed by parents at school board meetings in recent years has found a mirror, as students at high schools throughout California increasingly are willing to criticize each other about political views, race and sexuality.
What’s more, incidents of students demeaning each other verbally are most common on campuses in the most politically divided congressional districts, according to a study based on reports from 150 high school principals released late Monday, March 13, by researchers at UCLA and UC Riverside.
