Political strife is harming California teens’ high school experience, study says |
California is often cited as a bastion of left-leaning politics, with an electorate that voted for Joe Biden over Donald Trump by a nearly 2-1 ratio in 2020. But a study of the state’s high schools shows that California campuses are just as likely to experience political strife as those in other, more polarized states. “The surprise here is not that California is different, it is that our public schools are experiencing similar levels of political attacks and conflict with what we have seen across the nation,” said John Rogers, a study co-author and director of the UCLA Institute for Democracy, Education and Access. |

$45 million funneled toward California’s community schools |
California has approved another $45 million for community schools across the state — the latest phase of a $4.1 billion initiative to expand education, health and social services for students and their families. A decades-old model, community schools offer expanded support for not just students, but families and communities around the campus. That could include before and after school programs, learning opportunities for parents, extended food support, or other initiatives that fit the specific needs of a neighborhood. |

For Many LA Schools Staff, A New Contract Could Be A Reprieve From Major Financial Stress |
In the 23 years Jannette Verbera has worked for the district, she can’t remember a time where she didn’t work at least two jobs.
Verbera is an executive board member of Service Employees International Union Local 99, the union that represents school staff members employed by the Los Angeles Unified School District — 30,000 bus drivers, special education assistants, cafeteria workers and other core staff.

Payroll problems mount as teachers union and school district begin raise negotiations |
Why can’t we get paid? That’s the question San Francisco teachers are asking as their union and the school district begin negotiations for wage increases. The 70-member bargaining team represents the United Educators of San Francisco’s largest in history — and includes paraeducators, social workers, nurses and other employees working together to create a uniform proposal. But on day one of bargaining, the San Francisco Unified School District announced it will consider pouring more money into the payroll system that left thousands unpaid or underpaid. |
