New murals all the buzz on Ensign Seabees campus
Jennifer Bloomfield is happy to be back at the campus she attended nearly four decades ago. She still has her supplies she brings to Ensign Intermediate School in Newport Beach each day. But these are now the supplies of an artist, not a student. Bloomfield was recently contracted to paint seven murals on the Ensign campus.

Even in this female-dominated industry, men make more than women
The gender pay gap is so pervasive it appears in one of the country’s most female-dominated professions. Women make up roughly three-fourths of K-12 teaching jobs, which are generally tied to fixed salary schedules. Yet according to a new research brief from the Brookings Institution, female teachers typically make thousands less than their male counterparts. Even when controlling for credentials and other characteristics, male teachers make more on average.

Newsom proposes 'literacy road map' but will remain hands-off on how districts teach reading
Entering a contentious debate over reading, Gov. Gavin Newsom proposes that districts base literacy instruction on decades of research known as “the science of reading” as the next step to getting all children reading by third grade. In budget language, Newsom is calling for literacy experts to create a “literacy road map” that would emphasize “explicit instruction in phonics, phonemic awareness, and other decoding skills” in the early grades. They are among the fundamental skills grounded in scientifically based research.

Layoffs for next year up for vote by West Contra Costa Unified school board
West Contra Costa Unified school workers say they are puzzled by the district’s proposal for layoffs next year and plan to protest at Wednesday’s school board meeting when it goes up for a vote. The proposals to lay off elementary playground supervisors and other school workers and eliminate and reduce certain school services at the end of this school year have not been finalized yet, said district spokeswoman Liz Sanders. The number of employees who potentially would be laid off and other specifics of the proposal won’t be determined until Tuesday.

'It's hard to focus': Schools say American kids are hungry
America's schools say kids are hungry — just as pandemic-era benefit programs have lapsed. There is growing concern about the effects on kids' ability to learn. Congress temporarily made school meals free to all American schoolkids, but since that ended last fall, the need has only seemed to grow. Soaring food prices are adding strains on families who are seeing reductions in multiple kinds of financial assistance. One federal program that ends this month had given nearly 30 million Americans extra food stamps during the pandemic.
