WATCH: Park honoring historic Mendez v. Westminster civil rights case opens to the public |
Mendez Tribute Monument Park is officially open to visitors. On Thursday, Dec. 1, the City of Westminster formally debuted a new quarter-acre public space honoring the landmark Mendez v. Westminster case, which put an end to forced segregation in California’s public schools and laid the foundation for the U.S. Supreme Court’s sweeping Brown v. Board decision. A ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony marked the completion of the five-year project, which represented a collaboration between the city and OCDE. |

New Westminster park honors landmark Mendez school desegregation case |
Seventy-five years after the Mendez v. Westminster ruling, leading to the desegregation of schools in California, the city of Westminster celebrated the opening of a new small park honoring the landmark case. The Mendez Tribute Monument Park opened Thursday, Dec. 1 with new statues as well as stations that incorporate technology, allowing visitors to learn the story of children who back in 1943 were denied entry into White schools. Then, they were told: “Go to the Mexican school.”
Sylvia Mendez, now 86, was one of those children.
