CAPISTRANO DISPATCH

Charter School Appeals Application to Orange County Board of Education
After the Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees reached a standstill while deciding on an application for a new charter school, the petitioners behind California Republic Leadership Academy (CRLA) are turning to a different educational governing board for possible approval. CRLA is appealing its application to the Orange County Board of Education (OCBE), after the CUSD Board of Trustees effectively took no action following split votes on both approving and denying the prospective school’s charter petition.

Schools are becoming hotbeds of political conflict – especially in purple districts
A new study based on surveys with hundreds of high school principals finds partisan politics are leading to more conflict at school. The problems are particularly bad at schools in purple communities, those whose voters are close to evenly split Republican-Democrat. High rates of principals in purple communities report a dramatic increase between 2018 and 2022 in parents or community members challenging instruction, and in harassment of LGBTQ+ students.

The chase is on: Regulators are slowly cracking down on vapes aimed at teens
Samuel Rose says he was raised by a devoted single mom who warned all her seven children to avoid drugs, alcohol and cigarettes. But when his high school friend urged him to try making vapor rings with a Juul e-cigarette five years ago, Rose figured there was no danger — vaping was billed as a healthier alternative to smoking. But soon, daily vaping made his lungs feel too small to power him down the football field. He worked 30 hours a week after school, largely to fund his habit.
