LA schools grapple with ban on nearby homeless encampments
Principal Andrew Conroy ran down to the lower field at Virgil Middle School in Los Angeles’ Koreatown. It was a Wednesday in November during the middle of the school day, and he had just received notice that smoke was blowing over the fence from the homeless encampment that lined the field’s fence. There, at least 10 tents crowded the sidewalk, packed with bikes, tarps and personal belongings as its residents went about their day.

Children who breathe polluted air can fall behind in school, study finds
Small children living in poor neighborhoods are more likely to be exposed to air pollution, which can harm their cognitive development, according to a study published Wednesday, as the Washington Post reported. Increased exposure to air toxins during infancy, this research suggests, can reduce reading and math abilities and cause children to fall behind at school. While there are certainly other issues that affect school readiness, the study found that exposure to air pollutants accounted for a third of the impact compared to other factors.

Alpine Union school is ahead of the state timeline in TK education
Most California school districts are slowly rolling out transitional kindergarten (TK) programs for 4-year-old children, which was allowed by the new state law that took effect this fall. The universal TK program will be available for free to every 4-year-old in California by 2026 regardless of their family’s income. But the Alpine Union School District is well ahead of the state law. The district’s Creekside Early Learning Center has offered an early admissions preschool program for the past 20 years. It is the only campus in San Diego County just for TK and kindergarten students.

Big tobacco tries to stop California flavored tobacco ban
R.J. Reynolds and other tobacco companies filed a request Tuesday asking the U.S. Supreme Court to impose an emergency order to stop California from enforcing a ban on flavored tobacco products that was overwhelmingly approved by voters earlier this month. The ban was first passed by the state legislature two years ago, but it never took effect after tobacco companies gathered enough signatures to put it on the ballot. But after nearly two-thirds of voters approved of banning the sale of everything from cotton-candy vaping juice to methanol cigarettes, it is set to go into effect by Dec. 21.
