LAUSD Measure RR ends dry spell in raising taxes for schools
Los Angeles school officials on Tuesday revived an irresistible formula from the past in winning passage of Measure RR, a $7-billion bond to modernize campuses in California’s largest school system. The formula is: Find a presidential election in which motivated Democrats turn out in large numbers. It worked in 2008 when Angelenos amassed to put Barack Obama in the White House. And it worked in 2020, when Angelenos cast votes en masse, most hoping to remove President Trump.

SAN DIEGO UNION TRIBUNE

Oceanside $160 million school bond appears headed for approval
With partial election results listed Wednesday, Oceanside’s $160 million school bond proposal, Measure W, appeared to be clearing the threshold for passage. School bond measures require a supermajority of 55 percent to pass; as of Wednesday, the measure had exceeded that. However, many ballots were still uncounted, and school officials said they were hopeful but not certain of its passage.

San Diego Unified School Board candidates backed by unions prevail
Incumbents and union-backed candidates are again prevailing in the San Diego Unified School Board election — proving, they say, that voters support how San Diego Unified has been handling the pandemic, reopening and other key issues. San Diego Unified is reopening cautiously and slowly and has set a tentative reopening date for January 2021.

2020 May Be the Last Cake Walk for Union-Backed School Board Candidates
A citywide ballot measure reshaping the way school board elections are held in San Diego is on track to pass. The change could diminish the role special interests, particularly the teachers union, play in those contests.

How much support did school bonds get from Clovis, Fresno voters in the election?
Although voters must wait to see final election results in the coming days, it appears that most Fresno County voters favored approving school bond measures. Over the years, school districts across the central San Joaquin Valley have leveraged bonds to invest and renovate facilities. Bond measures need at least 55% voter approval to pass, and the three largest school districts in Fresno County with bonds on the ballot had surpassed that with more than half of votes counted as of Wednesday morning.

How P.E. teachers are trying to get students off the couch during the pandemic
Imagine trying to work out in a crowded living room, with no exercise equipment besides rolled-up socks and soup cans. For many students in California, that’s what physical education class looks like these days. Since campuses closed in March, P.E. teachers are scrambling for creative ways to keep students physically active — with no gymnasiums, sports fields or playgrounds — at a time when experts say students’ physical and mental health is paramount.
