OC School Reopening Debate Continues as Potential Second Coronavirus Wave Looms |
A second wave of coronavirus case spikes and hospitalizations could hit Orange County soon as the debate to reopen classrooms continues at schools throughout the county. “The worst was in early July here in Orange County. We’re already seeing second waves in Massachusetts and other places. We’re going to be seeing something quite similar, in fact,” said UC Irvine epidemiologist and public health expert Andrew Noymer in a Monday phone interview.

LAUSD, Long Beach Unified join larger districts in calling for statewide standard to reopen schools |
As more school districts plan for students and staff to eventually return to campus following months of distance learning, some of California’s largest K-12 systems are asking Gov. Gavin Newsom and the state Legislature to adopt a set of statewide reopening standards and to provide funding to ensure schools have the means to resume in-person classes safely. On Monday, Nov. 2, the superintendents of the Los Angeles, Long Beach, Santa Ana, San Diego, Fresno, Oakland and Sacramento unified school districts sent a letter to Newsom, urging him to support a so-called “Common Standard.” The letter also stated the need for “collective action” on the part of various government agencies for schools to reopen successfully.

High-schoolers nationwide are volunteering to staff voting stations |
Bob Brandon, president and chief executive of the Fair Elections Center and one of the founding partners of Power the Polls, a group that uses social media to boost voting rates nationwide, said a record number of high-schoolers are volunteering at polling stations this year. The vast majority of states — somewhere north of 40, Brandon said — allow people under 18 to help staff polling stations, whether for a salary or free. Each state can set its own rules regarding this issue. Many require that volunteers be at least 16.

San Jose Unified plans to reopen classrooms in January |
San Jose Unified School District announced plans Monday to reopen classrooms in January to students who have been studying at home through online remote learning since the coronavirus pandemic erupted in March. The announcement from the district with more than 28,000 students in 41 elementary, middle and high schools comes amid growing impatience among many parents with continued school closures even as coronavirus cases subside and many private, charter and small district schools already have reopened.

California school districts revert to A-F grades this fall — with more flexibility for some students |
While many high schools and middle schools adopted pass-fail grading at the start of the pandemic in order to hold students harmless as they adjusted to distance learning, districts have largely reverted back to the traditional A-to-F system.
But now that students are receiving their fall progress reports, it appears as though in at least some districts, many students’ grades are slipping.

Anthem Blue Cross donates $100,000 to LAUSD relief program |
A $100,000 donation from the Anthem Blue Cross Foundation will help provide meals and other necessities to families in need while Los Angeles Unified schools remain closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, district officials announced Monday.
The donation to Los Angeles Students Most in Need, a charity established by LAUSD Superintendent Austin Beutner, will support the district’s ongoing food-relief efforts that have already provided more than 73 million meals to students and families — the largest food relief effort of its kind in the nation’s history.

What we know so far about school reopenings in California |
As more California public schools get set to reopen their campuses to students and teachers with a rhythm unseen in previous months, the pool of schools that have reopened so far have largely avoided triggering coronavirus outbreaks. Most of the school districts in the state that have physically reopened have implemented hybrid schedules where kids split time learning in classrooms and remotely from home. Several others have transitioned or plan to transition to in-person learning in phases, beginning with younger students. Both are measures that public-health experts say help reduce the spread of the virus.
