How camouflaged vaping devices are fooling parents, getting into schools
In yet another twist for worried parents: Meet the vaping hoodie. This high school fashion mainstay — defined by a hood with drawstrings — is now available as a vaping device, ready to deliver a puff of nicotine (or marijuana) anywhere, anytime. Including in the classroom. It marks an addition to the fleet of discreet — some would say camouflaged — vaping devices that have teachers and parents struggling to monitor the usage of a product that has surged in popularity among high school-aged kids in the past two years, despite laws in most states that allow sales only to people 18 and up. (In California, it’s 21.) A computer mouse. A phone case. Backpacks. USB jump drives. The vaping kit options colorfully advertised online are fashionable and many.

Sacramento City Unified teacher vacancies mean hundreds of students are taught by substitutes
More than three weeks into the school year, several hundred Sacramento City Unified School District students are being taught by substitutes as school officials continue to look for teachers to staff classrooms. The district estimates that about 46 classrooms have teaching vacancies, which officials said is normal for this time of year. But the Sacramento City Teachers Association said that there are about 100 certificated vacancies, including counselors and nurses. More than 1,000 students are being affected, sometimes being taught electives and required courses by substitutes who are not experienced in subjects like Spanish and art.

San Diego leaders, students discuss bill that would train educators to support LGBTQ youth
The reality of being a transgender student in California’s public education system is often grim. These students often get bullied or shunned by students, and teachers often don’t know how to react when the students report problems. That is why Assemblyman Todd Gloria and an LGBTQ advocacy group on Wednesday met with San Diego high school students and staff to discuss a new bill designed to make things better for LGBTQ students.

'It's our future that's at stake': US students plan to skip school Friday to fight climate 'emergency'
Tens of thousands of high school students in cities nationwide plan to skip classes Friday to attend Global Climate Strike marches calling for immediate action to end climate change. They will be part of a global joint protest aimed directly at the adults who they say are ignoring the destruction of the planet. “We have to treat climate change as what it is — an emergency,” said Audrey Maurine Xin Lin, an 18-year-old who’s been one of the coordinators of the Boston school strike and march.

New tool in East Bay history class: ‘Assassin’s Creed’ video game
Students sit huddled around a computer monitor. Headphones are planted atop their heads. Armed with a video game controller, they plunge into an exploration of ancient Greece. This could be what education looks like in the future. At the Fab Lab on the Kennedy High School campus in Richmond, 18 students stopped by recently to check out “Assassin’s Creed Odyssey: Discovery Tour.” Unlike the main games in the series, this version cuts out the violence and ratchets up the learning. It’s a project that repackages the video games developed by Ubisoft Montreal as experience that makes history come alive.
