OCDE NEWSROOM

Your one-page guide to health education in California (available in Spanish)
Earlier this year, the California Board of Education approved a framework to help teachers deliver lessons aligned with the state’s health education standards, which cover six content areas. So we created this printable, one-page guide outlining the content areas with a grade-by-grade breakdown of when they’re taught, along with a few specific examples. As always, if you have any questions about what your child is learning, we encourage you to call or email your child’s teacher.

Educators will get another shot at writing state ethnic studies curriculum
California educators want another stab at creating an ethnic studies curriculum for high school students, and it looks like they’ll have another year to do it. Tony Thurmond, the state’s schools superintendent, announced plans Monday, Sept. 16, to revise and improve a proposed curriculum model that earlier this year was criticized as politically biased, misleading and anti-Semitic. The California Department of Education plans to hold sessions with ethnic studies teachers and others to get feedback on what should be in the curriculum.

This Irvine teen didn’t let deafness stop him from landing a role in the musical ‘Sweeney Todd’
The way Joe Saraceni tells the story, it really wasn’t that big of a deal to land the role of Tobias “Toby” Ragg in a production of the Stephen Sondheim musical “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” “One day, I was just scrolling through Instagram and I saw an ad for the show,” says the 15-year-old University High sophomore from Irvine. “I saw the audition was coming up really soon. “So I told my parents when it was and I contacted (Broadway On Tour) to get more information for what I would need to do,” he says in a matter-of-fact manner. “And that’s how I got the part.”

A month into new school year, and no new contract for Redlands Unified teachers and other school employees
Working without a contract since June 2018, Redlands Unified School District teachers and classified personnel are rallying again for higher wages. More than 100 members of the Redlands Teachers Association and the Redlands Education Support Professionals Association in red shirts held signs at a school board meeting Tuesday, Sept. 10, calling for better pay. The two unions, which combined represent close to 2,000 employees, negotiate separately. Those negotiations started around December 2018.

Marine Corps program in San Bernardino County supports more than a few good men and women
While several high students have jobs, chores, or other weekend duties, there are some who are able to participate in a program sponsored by the U.S. Marines. This year, 15 youth from San Bernardino County participated in the Devil Pups training. This is not a recruitment effort as the Devil Pups is a nonprofit organization designed to help boys and girls from all backgrounds gain self-confidence and learn to take responsibility for their actions. Devil Pups is a leadership camp comprising 10 days of challenge, teamwork, discipline and education for boys and girls between the ages of 14 and 17.
