Surveys Show Wide Health and Wellness Disparities in San Diego Schools
San Diego Unified School District, as well as other districts around the state, possess a trove of information on students’ perspectives of their educations. Those perspectives say a lot about the health of the region’s schools. The California Healthy Kids Survey is administered to most schools in San Diego Unified each year and asks a range of questions about student experience, including: Do you get to do interesting activities in school? Do adults there care about you? Is your school clean and tidy? Do you feel safe?

Full-day kindergarten could soon be required in every California school
Kindergartners across California could soon be spending more time in their classrooms if Gov. Gavin Newsom signs a bill approved by the state Legislature last week. The legislation, Assembly Bill 197, introduced by Assemblywoman Shirley Weber, D-San Diego, would require every public elementary school, including charter schools, to offer at least one kindergarten class the same length as 1st grade, beginning in the 2022-23 school year.

State Legislature approves later start times for California middle, high school students
After former Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed a bill last year that proposed starting middle and high school times later to give teens more time to sleep, the bill’s author started working to bring it back again this year. Although the bill originally banned both middle and high schools from starting before 8:30 a.m., Sen. Anthony Portantino, D-San Fernando Valley, agreed to amendments in May that would allow middle schools to start at 8 a.m. while keeping high school start times at 8:30 a.m., to give districts more flexibility in scheduling buses.

No Resource Officers At Sacramento Schools As Parents, District Debate Role Of Police On Campus
Teachers and parents in the city of Sacramento are on both sides of a debate as to whether police officers should be on school grounds full time. Right now, there are no school resource officers (SROs) employed to respond to calls for help from the Sacramento City Unified School District. Part of this was by design of the district and the school board, which cut the number of positions from eight to three. But right now, the number of officers employed by the district is zero.
