Skyview students learn soccer skills from LA Galaxy coaches at Jewish festival
A group of students from OCDE’s ACCESS Skyview Elementary and Middle School were recently invited by the Merage Jewish Community Center of Orange County as guests of the 2018 JCC Maccabi Games and ArtFest. The JCC Maccabi Games, one of the largest annual Jewish youth events, was held at the UC Irvine campus earlier this month. Skyview is a K-8 program geared towards homeless students throughout the county.

Orange Coast College offering free tuition for first-year students
Orange Coast College is launching its new “Pirates’ Promise” offering free tuition to full-time students for their first year of college. Students will need to be taking at least 15 units, which would cost about $690 a semester. Students will still pay for their textbooks and other expenses such as student health fees and service charges. The program will only be open to California residents.

More security at Placentia-Yorba Linda schools
Several school-related topics deserve attention this week, as more than 25,000 students begin classes at 34 campuses in the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District, which includes 17 sites in Placentia, 12 in Yorba Linda, four in Anaheim and one in Fullerton. Additional steps have been taken for school safety, with new fencing at several sites, implementation of new front office procedures and installation of camera systems costing some $335,000 at El Dorado, Esperanza, Valencia and Yorba Linda high schools.

Legislators approved a bill Thursday that would allow school officials to restrain or seclude students only if they pose an imminent threat to themselves or others.

Additional school resource officer to serve in Newport Beach
The Newport Beach Police Department will add a school resource officer following the Newport-Mesa Unified School District board of trustees’ unanimous approval Tuesday of a new agreement with the department. The new school resource officer, the third in Newport Beach, will be based at Ensign Intermediate School but also will cover all Newport elementary schools.

California lawmakers send school safety bills to Gov. Brown's desk
Among the torrent of legislation California lawmakers approved this week are bills mandating school safety plans and classroom door locks and a bill allowing school personnel to file a gun violence restraining order. They are now awaiting Gov. Jerry Brown’s signature — or veto.

New Murals Grace Walls of LCAD, High School
Laguna College of Art and Design MFA alumnus and fine arts faculty member, Timothy Robert Smith, has unveiled two murals just in time for the fall semester. Momentum (60 feet by 30 feet) is now on the art building at Laguna Beach High School and Glimpseon the Studio Building at LCAD Main Campus. In spring 2018, Smith was approached by Laguna Beach High School teachers Bridget Beaudry-Porter and Dawn Hunnicut to collaborate on a mural using images of high school students representing different electives, sports and core subjects.
