Gates Foundation dumps 'big idea' approach to build on school progress in L.A. and elsewhere
The education experts at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation used to be after the one “big idea” that could transform public school education. They tried breaking down large schools into smaller, more intimate communities. They tried using test scores to evaluate teachers. Now experience seems to have taught them not to impose so much from outside.

Tensions rise between LAUSD, Teachers’ Union as strike vote continues
With Los Angeles Unified teachers considering a possible strike, tensions between the district and union continued mounting Tuesday, with LAUSD officials accusing the union of bad-faith bargaining. Most Americans say public-school teachers are underpaid and say they would support them if they went on strike for better wages, a new poll shows, offering backup for newly assertive educators. At the same time, the poll found American confidence in teachers at a low point. Also, the share of Americans who would want one of their children to become a teacher has fallen sharply, partly because of low pay, the poll found.

A California community college adopts a New York model that doubled graduation rates
California is looking outside its borders for a proven approach to improving community college completion. The challenge is real. Though the state budget has increased spending on the community college system by $2.6 billion since 2011, the system has fallen short of its goals for student graduation. As of 2017-18, less than a tenth of its students who seek degrees or certificates earned them within three years.

All school buses in California must have seat belts by 2035 under a bill signed Monday by Gov. Jerry Brown. Aiden Vasquez, 10, felt much better on Tuesday, despite what happened at school a day earlier. According to Aiden's mother, Lizette Casanova, some students in her son's grade at Two Bunch Palms Elementary in Desert Hot Springs tried to rip his backpack at school and the fifth grader fought back.
