Donated backpacks help kids get ready for new school year |
About 40 students at College View Elementary School in Huntington Beach received new backpacks stuffed with school supplies Tuesday, thanks to a donation from OnTrac, an Arizona-based package delivery company. The school’s office staff selected the backpack recipients based on which families would benefit the most from the donated supplies, said Julie Jennings, spokeswoman for the Ocean View School District. |

Schools bring laundry services to campus to boost attendance |
One New Jersey high school joined the growing list that has installed laundry facilities on campus in an effort to address high rates of chronic absenteeism by helping ensure students have clean clothes. The school partnered with Whirlpool to bring washers and dryers on campus through the company’s “Care Counts” program. Attendance rates for high-risk students increased from 82 to 91 percent during the 2016-2017 school year among those that had laundry facilities installed. |

Legislature funds intervention, now comes the hard part |

Now, the California State Board of Education begins its work in earnest on plans for using that money to support instructional services in the nearly 30 percent of the K-12 districts known to be poorly performing. |

Why LAUSD's 30,000 Teachers Might Go On Strike |
More than 30,000 teachers in the Los Angeles Unified School District are voting this week whether to authorize a strike. If enough LAUSD teachers vote "yes," the leaders of their union, United Teachers Los Angeles, would have the power to launch the first teachers strike in LAUSD since 1989. The voting ends Thursday. |
