OCDE in 30: Does your school have an Academic Pentathlon team? |
You tend to hear more about the Academic Pentathlon in the spring, when teams of middle schoolers are preparing for the county competition. But now’s the time when schools are assembling their squads and recruiting new talent for 2018-19, so we thought we’d help spread the word. If you’ve not heard of the Academic Pentathlon, it’s a five-event competition for grades six, seven and eight, showcasing knowledge of literature, math, science, social science and the fine arts. |

Taxpayer group opposes San Diego Unified bond measure |
The San Diego County Taxpayers Association has come out against San Diego Unified’s proposed bond measure that voters will see on the November ballot.
The 30-year borrowing measure, which would bring in $3.5 billion through a property tax increase, is the largest bond in the school district’s history. It also marks the third time in a decade that San Diego Unified has asked taxpayers for additional funding for capital improvement projects.

Bill allowing schools to permit medical cannabis use passes Calif. Legislature |
California school districts could decide whether to allow their K-12 students who use cannabis for medical conditions to consume it on campus under a bill passed by the state Legislature on Monday and headed to Gov. Jerry Brown. SB1127, by Sen. Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo, would allow school districts to adopt policies allowing students with special needs or severe disabilities to use medical cannabis on campus. The bill does not require school districts to create policies but permits them to decide if they want to allow it. |

SBE’s charters report mixed performance results |
Among the sprawling network of 27 charter schools overseen by the California State Board of Education, 20 were found to be in good financial health during the 2017-18 fiscal year. But just nine in the group were found to have either met the state standards for academic progress or exceeded it. Six schools were found to have met some student performance marks but not others, and two charters were found to be failing. |

Students Voice Support for Early Start |
Laguna Beach High School leadership students were the accidental stars of the Aug. 21 Laguna Beach Unified School District board meeting. One after another, the young scholars voiced their support for revising the district’s calendar. Ironically, the students did not intend to speak about the controversial issue. |

The School Shootings That Weren't |
How many times per year does a gun go off in an American school? We should know. But we don't. This spring the U.S. Education Department reported that in the 2015-2016 school year, "nearly 240 schools ... reported at least 1 incident involving a school-related shooting." The number is far higher than most other estimates. |
