Vietnamese student finds her place – along with success – at Fountain Valley High
When Melanie Chambraud arrived in the United States three years ago from Vietnam to study at Fountain Valley High, she wasn’t sure how or if she would ever fit in. Although she had grown up speaking English, along with Vietnamese and French, and had attended a Canadian International school in Ho Chi Minh City, Southern California was a culture shock.

Five questions with new La Habra City Superintendent Joanne Culverhouse
Striving to be first has always been something Joanne Culverhouse tried for. From a first-grade reading contest, to being the first to get in line, to learning how to ride a unicycle before a best friend could. She was a three-sport star in high school, including All-American in basketball her senior year at Western High School in Las Vegas, and went to the University of Nevada, Reno on an athletic scholarship. Competition has always pushed Culverhouse. A lot of it has to do with the way the new La Habra City School District superintendent was raised.

Lake View Elementary third-grader takes on role as principal for a day
As Mehmet Emre, 9, got ready for school Wednesday morning, he knew he needed to look good. He opted against a T-shirt and instead selected a turquoise dress shirt with a blue polka dot bow tie. Unlike most days where the third-grader would head to class to learn from his teachers, he was among 12 students who were selected to role play during Lake View Elementary’s Staff Member of the Day. Students took on jobs including principal, office manager, receptionist, custodian, health tech and teacher.

As social and emotional learning expands, educators fear the 'fizzle
Four minutes late to his first class of the day, an 11th-grade boy at Oakland’s Skyline High School swung into his seat and blurted an explanation: “I had a bad nosebleed last night.” His U.S. history teacher, Jimmy Barbuto, looked up. Being late to class can wreck the morning flow at school, provoking confrontations and derailing lesson plans.

California State University could ax remedial placement test
For decades, California high school seniors have had to take special English and math exams to help determine if they need to enroll in remedial education courses once they begin their studies at a California State University (CSU) campus. But this year's class could be the last required to take the tests under a batch of proposals meant to improve the way the university system decides if a student needs remedial help once he or she enrolls.

State budget invests in child care, addresses consequences of wage increases
Over the past couple years, Krystal Johnson has been offered multiple raises and a promotion in her work in retail. But she's turned every one down. The $.50 or $2 hourly wage increase would have come with a cost. She would earn too much to qualify for state-subsidized child care.
