Newport-Mesa Unified board wants more research before term limits go on a ballot
Following an hour-long discussion Tuesday about establishing term limits for trustees of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District board, its members agreed that they want to see more research on the issue before bringing it to voters. Adding term limits has been a contentious topic among Newport-Mesa activists in recent years. Three board candidates made it a campaign issue during the 2016 election.

Budget would soften anti-union case before Supreme Court
As part of the budget deal set for approval in the Legislature today, lawmakers have included a provision aimed at protecting public employee unions from a likely ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court striking down mandatory dues. Otherwise, there are few surprises in the 2017-18 spending bill from the proposal that Gov. Jerry Brown released last month. For schools, that means $74.5 billion in overall Proposition 98 funding, of which, $57.2 billion is earmarked under the Local Control Funding Formula for next year.

Transgender Teachers Talk About Their Experiences At School
Growing up, Kelly Jenkins spent his spare time playing sports. He was an all-star player on the baseball team at his school in the mountains of east Tennessee. And sometimes, he wore lipstick to practice. As he grew up, Jenkins felt like he wanted to become a teacher. "Everybody told me it was a horrible idea," Jenkins remembers. "They said, 'Nobody will ever hire you as a transgender woman.' "
