Laguna Hills High School hosts ‘One Town, One Team’ event |
No kids are allowed at Laguna Hills High School on Thursday, June 15 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., while adults throughout the community are invited to ‘One Town, One Team,’ a preview event for this year’s grad night. The free event, which includes free food samples from local restaurants, is a donation-based fundraiser that previews what the LHHS campus will look like on grad night. LHHS is one of four schools in Orange County that continues to host an on-campus graduation celebration, instead of bussing grads out to amusement parks or other entertainment, said Meg Gorham, former LHHS parent and community volunteer. |

Teen courts help to keep kids out of juvenile court system |
In mock courtrooms supervised by a local judge, first-time teen offenders face a jury of their peers and receive sentences that often keep them in school and out of the juvenile justice system for minor crimes. Combined with other statewide efforts such as promoting restorative justice techniques in schools and eliminating zero tolerance policies, youth courts are helping to reduce the number of incarcerated teens in California charged with minor crimes. |

School choice can’t help where it might be most needed |
As Congress considers a $1 billion school choice grant program, findings from a new study out of Ohio suggest those students who would most benefit might not always have the option. Researchers from the Fordham Institute looked at participation and academic outcomes of students using Ohio’s inter-district open enrollment program, the oldest and perhaps most common form of school choice in the U.S. |

How To Apply The Brain Science Of Resilience To The Classroom |
Neuroscience isn't on many elementary school lesson plans. But this spring, a second grade class at Fairmont Neighborhood School in the South Bronx is plunging in.
Sarah Wechsler, an instructional coach with wide eyes and a marathoner's energy, asks the students to think about the development and progress that they've made already in their lives.

LAUSD board adds two more years to Superintendent Michelle King's contract |
Los Angeles Unified School Board members voted Tuesday to add another two years to superintendent Michelle King's contract, extending her agreement to lead the nation's second-largest school district through June 2020. The extension comes a full year before King's previous contract was set to expire — and less than a month before two L.A. Unified board members are set to turn over their seats to their newly-elected replacements. |
