All aboard! Train whisks OC teens off to prom at Union station
It was billed as “Prom Train 2017.” The students at Los Amigos High School took a different track for their prom this year. Instead of having it in a gym festooned with streamers, 299 students donned their gowns and tuxes and paraded onto a train at Santa Ana’s Regional Transportation Center. Metrolink took them to their dance at stately Union Station in Los Angeles. For most of the students, this was their first train ride.

Middle-school students embrace endless summer ... of linear equations
This summer, more than 2,000 California middle-school students who are struggling in math will give up the carefree, endless days of summer for algebra. Voluntarily. A free math camp called Elevate, funded by the Silicon Valley Education Foundation, aims to give an academic boost to kids who are performing just below average – but not failing – in middle-school math.

Another Sacramento effort to direct LCFF spending
Legislation requiring detailed disclosure of education spending down to the school site moved out of the state Assembly last week without dissent, setting up this summer’s showdown between advocates for low-income families and Gov. Jerry Brown over the use of billions in state aid. AB 1321 by Assemblywoman Shirley Weber, D-San Diego, would require local educational agencies to collect and report expenditures of federal, state and local funds both by districts and individual schools. The bill also calls for spending to be broken out as either personnel or non-personnel expenses.

U.S. pre-K enrollment falls behind European countries
While increased state and federal funding has helped a growing number of children enroll in pre-kindergarten programs, the U.S. still lags far behind other high-income countries, according to a new study. In a report released last week by the American Institutes for Research, participation in pre-school in countries such as Denmark, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain and France was found to be drastically higher than in America, largely due to differing government policies and programs in those countries.

How To Apply The Brain Science Of Resilience To The Classroom
Neuroscience isn't on many elementary school lesson plans. But this spring, a second grade class at Fairmont Neighborhood School in the South Bronx is plunging in. Sarah Wechsler, an instructional coach with wide eyes and a marathoner's energy, asks the students to think about the development and progress that they've made already in their lives.
