Laguna Playhouse aims to counter growing anti-Semitism among youth with play about children and the Holocaust
The play features young actors portraying children in a concentration camp. About 100 Newport Harbor High students will be among those attending a matinee for school groups on Thursday, Oct. 24. That performance, along with a few others, will be followed by a discussion about the Holocaust. Among those speaking in the discussions will be Holocaust survivors, sharing their stories. Free tickets and transportation to the Laguna Beach theater, which seats about 400, is being provided to school children in Orange County. Doug Vogel, director of development for Laguna Playhouse, is disappointed that Newport Harbor is the only public school so far to take up the offer to have students attend the play free.

The Learning Curve: Wide Disparities in Test Scores Still Haunt San Diego Unified
The inequality across San Diego Unified School District’s hundred-plus schools is striking, according to new test data released by the Department of Education last week. as experts have long noted, much of what we see when we look at test scores is poverty. Many people have taken to calling it the “opportunity gap.” Low-income students have less access to health care, pre-school, books and a non-stressful home life. That gap is responsible for much of the gap in test scores.

Sacramento City Unified’s revised budget rejected once again as reserves ‘fall short’
Sacramento City Unified School District’s revised 2019-20 budget has been disapproved by the county Office of Education, district officials said Wednesday – the latest in a long string of such rejections. The county asked the district to revise and resubmit its spending plan by Oct 8. But the revised budget did not pass muster, according to an Oct. 10 letter from county schools Superintendent David Gordon. Gordon said the district has until Dec. 31 to balance its budget, and reverse its deficit spending. He recommended making cuts immediately.

How will Sacramento-area schools adjust to later start times? Clock is ticking under new law
More shut-eye for students could mean more stress for local school districts, which have until 2022 to complete the changes. Some Sacramento-area high schools begin classes nearly an hour before the new 8:30 start time. The nine high schools in Elk Grove Unified, the region’s largest school district, are among those that will require extensive schedule adjustments. Campuses including Laguna Creek and Sheldon high start classes at 7:45 a.m. Elk Grove Unified officials say they anticipate school will end later in the day, and more bus routes and drivers will be needed as the number of students relying on transportation could rise.

How one high school's dispute reflects the struggle to teach California’s science standards
At Northwood High School in the Irvine Unified School District, students are required to take two years of integrated science, which combines chemistry, biology, physics and earth and space science lessons in each course, rather than being taught each subject separately one year at a time. But several parents and former students say they are concerned that teachers lack expertise in all subjects. In addition, they say the textbooks are outdated and the model has turned some students away from science.

Why CA didn’t overhaul student aid this year — but could soon
It has long been a refrain among California students struggling to pay for housing, food and textbooks: There’s more to the high cost of college than tuition. Early this year, as state lawmakers convened, hopes were high that finally, California was listening.
