Poet Laureate to speak in OC as part of Creative Edge Lecture series |
|
Author and performer Joy Harjo, who was recently named the 23rd Poet Laureate of the United States, has been announced as the featured speaker at the 11th annual Creative Edge Lecture, which will take place in February. Hosted by Arts Orange County in association with OCDE and Fourth District PTA, the Creative Edge Lecture series was established in 2010 to give local artists, educators, business leaders and community members an opportunity to hear from distinguished thought-leaders and innovators whose work is served by creativity.

Anaheim UHSD agrees to pay Kennedy sex abuse victims $7.9 million |
|
The settlement comes nearly five years after a Kennedy coach was first alerted of potential sexual misconduct by Joshua Owens, a water polo coach, and almost four years since Owens was cleared by school officials of a second set of sexual abuse allegations following a 15 to 20 minute investigation by Kennedy officials in which they made no attempt to interview the alleged victim or whistleblower.

Student arrested after bringing gun into La Habra High School |
|
A male student was arrested after he allegedly brought a gun to La Habra High School, on Tuesday morning, Oct. 15, which led to a 30-minute lockdown.
At around 9:30 a.m., someone at the high school called authorities after seeing the student with a gun, La Habra Police Department Lt. Daniel Barnes said.
“As soon as they heard the call, the school went on lockdown,” he said. “The school resource officer was present and responded to the area in question. The student was detained and the investigation is ongoing.”

When it comes to concussions in high school sports, there is good news and bad news, a new study suggests. The rates of football practice concussions and recurrent concussions across all sports have gone down in recent years, according to the study, published in the journal Pediatrics on Tuesday. The bad news: Concussion rates increased in football games.

From a multipronged attempt to reshape student lunches in Oakland to the addition of vegan options in the sprawling Los Angeles Unified School District, K-12 schools across California are rethinking and reformulating student meals. A new challenge is a federal directive from the Trump administration to roll back Obama-era standards that called for less sodium, more whole-grain foods and fewer sweetened milk drinks in school lunches. California and five other states are suing to block a federal directive to roll back standards calling for less sodium and fewer sweetened drinks.

California community colleges need money to meet new state law to help dreamers |
|
Only 19 community colleges have staff designated to serving undocumented students, according to the system’s data. But under AB 1645, which Gov. Gavin Newsom signed on Saturday, all 115 colleges in the system will be required to designate a staff member as a Dream Resource Liaison. The liaisons will be responsible for assisting undocumented students in accessing financial aid and other resources.

When Shari Selman returned to her kindergarten classroom at Van Gogh Charter School on Monday morning, before the children arrived, she immediately began rubbing down every surface with baby wipes. The baby wipes turned black.
"The smell was atrocious," the teacher said. "Our eyes were burning and throats were on fire before the students even arrived."

Chicago teachers are set to strike Thursday, after months of failed negotiations with the city. Teachers are primarily fighting for more support staff in schools, smaller class sizes and increased pay. If no deal is made by Thursday, about 25,000 teachers will go on strike in the nation’s third largest district, impacting about 300,000 students. Another union, Service Employees International Union Local 73, which represents park workers and school support staff, may also strike on Thursday, adding an additional 10,000 people to the picket lines.
