Kennedy administrators, teachers linked to sex abuse case still employed by Anaheim UHSD |
The Anaheim Union High School District, citing confidentiality obligations, refused to say Wednesday what disciplinary action if any it has taken against four individuals still employed in the district who failed to report allegations of sexual abuse at Kennedy High School to law enforcement or Child Protective Services as required by California law.
The district has reached a $7.9 million settlement with five female former Kennedy water polo players who alleged they were sexually abused by Joshua Owens, a coach at the school, and that Kennedy administrators and teachers enabled their abuse by failing to report to authorities multiple prior allegations of sexual misconduct by Owens.

Some Hemet students are turning in their cellphones during class – and liking it |
Last year, many students at Tahquitz High School in Hemet weren’t fully paying attention. Teachers and administrators knew drastic steps had to be taken. So this year, students at Tahquitz, Acacia Middle School and Alessandro Continuation School are putting their phones away during class and stashing them inside numbered pockets where teachers can monitor them. Phones can still be used during passing periods, lunch and other times students are not in class.

Frustration surfaces over redesign at East Bay school |
Earlier this year, the West Contra Costa Unified School District attempted to answer a tough question: What would it take to turn around a struggling school like Stege Elementary in Richmond? Now nearly two months into the new school year, the principal, while still hopeful, says she’s frustrated that the school lacks a clear plan and change hasn’t come fast enough.

Chicago Teachers Will Go On Strike, Capping Years Of Social Justice Activism |
For the second time in seven years, Chicago Public Schools teachers will be on strike starting Thursday, walking out of class, they say, in the name of better schools.
Gathered on the stage of the union hall on Wednesday, the Chicago Teachers Union said its delegates were in full support of moving forward with a strike. Delegates had already authorized the walkout and set a date so it would have taken a reversal to cancel the strike.

Trump Administration Rule May Mean 1 Million Kids Lose Automatic Free Lunch |
Nearly a million children could lose their automatic eligibility for free school lunches under a Trump administration proposal that would reduce the number of people who get food stamps. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has released an analysis that says as many as 982,000 children could be affected by the change. About half would have to pay a reduced price of 40 cents for school lunch and 30 cents for breakfast. Around 40,000 would need to pay the full price, which varies depending on the district.
The rest — 445,000 — would remain eligible for free meals, but their families would have to apply to qualify.
