Want to avoid lockdown? You may not like the advice |
To avoid lockdowns, people in the United States will have to do things that they won’t necessarily want to do, such as wearing masks at indoor gatherings even if they’re vaccinated and having kids mask up in schools, the director of the National Institutes of Health said Monday. “We want to avoid lockdowns at all costs, but that means we’re going to have to do some other things that won’t necessarily be welcomed by people,” Dr. Francis Collins said on ABC’s “Good Morning America” when asked how he saw the fall playing out.

Orange County Board of Education will sue Newsom over face masks |
Claiming that wearing masks harms young children, the Orange County Board of Education announced Tuesday that it plans to sue Gov. Gavin Newsom over what it calls an “unwarranted” state mandate that students wear masks in classrooms this school year.
The board voted 4-0 during closed session in favor of filing the suit, and then had an attorney read a press release in which they said Newsom has abused his authority by indefinitely continuing to issue health edicts under a state of emergency.

Rancho Santiago district trustees are pushing SchoolsFirst to diversify at least half its board |
Rancho Santiago Community College District leaders are calling for SchoolsFirst – a credit union serving educators across the state – to immediately replace half its board of directors with people of color. That would take six of the credit union’s board members stepping down, which district trustees said in a July 12 letter to the board should happen in the next 90 days. Of the credit union’s allowed 13 voting directors, only one is a person of color. Until his appointment nine months ago, the board was composed of all White voting members.

OC Board of Education Looking to Sue Gov. Newsom Over Classroom Mask Mandate |
Orange County Board of Education members are moving to sue Gov. Gavin Newsom again, this time over the mask mandate for everyone at schools, regardless of their vaccination status. In a late Tuesday news release, the board said the mandate lacks “sound medical or scientific basis for the Governor’s requirement to mask school children (who in general are neither at risk from COVID-19 nor likely to spread it)…” Both the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend everyone wear masks at schools, regardless of vaccination status.

Students suffered deep, and unequal, mental health impacts during the pandemic, report finds |
Between 30% and 40% of young people said their mental health deteriorated during the pandemic, according to a sweeping new report on student wellness by the Center on Reinventing Public Education. Students who are Black, Latino, indigenous or low-income suffered more adverse effects, and the longer a student was learning remotely from home, the more their mental health suffered, according to the report.

A rising tide that lifts all boats’: Having more immigrant peers can boost scores for U.S.-born students, new study finds |
March marked an all-time monthly high in solo youth crossings at the U.S. southern border. Those children and teenagers could be an unexpected boon for native-born students should they reach American classrooms, a timely new study suggests. The research, which analyzes a decade’s worth of data from over 1.3 million Florida students, links the presence of immigrant classmates with gains in academic performance for students born in the U.S., especially for Black and low-income youth.

Elusive data show teaching candidates fail licensing exams in huge numbers |
Across the country each year, thousands of teaching candidates get ready to begin their classroom careers. They finish up their graduate coursework, start scanning excitedly for job openings — and then fail their states’ teacher licensure exams. Dejected and daunted by the prospect of retaking the test, many never become teachers.
It’s a distressing pattern that has been documented for years and increasingly draws the focus of policymakers attempting to diversify the profession.
