The one certainty in Bay Area school reopenings: Uncertainty will continue |
Bay Area schools are expected to fully reopen this month to in-person learning — throwing open their doors to excited students eager to end months of social distancing and academic isolation and get back to friends, football games, science fairs and rites of passage like prom. But that long-awaited return won’t be what many experts, education officials and families had hoped it would be: normal.

COVID: Delta surge, return to school draw Oakland families to vaccine clinic |
With the delta variant surging in Alameda County and the upcoming reopening of Oakland Unified schools for in-person learning, Mareme Sambndiaye felt the time had come. So she took her daughter, Aida Ndiaye, to Beebe Memorial Cathedral on Saturday, where church officials and Kaiser Permanente Northern California teamed up to host a vaccination clinic for anyone 12 and older. The pop-up distribution site offered backpacks equipped with pens, pencils and paper to the families stopping by and lunch boxes and $25 Target gift cards for people getting a shot.

Special education funding should be more streamlined, report finds |
To improve accountability and transparency in California’s special education system, funding should bypass local cost-sharing consortiums and go directly to school districts, according to a new report released Thursday. The report, compiled by researchers at the nonpartisan consulting firm West Ed, is the second of a two-part study of ways to improve funding for California’s 725,000 students with disabilities in K-12 public schools. Funded by private foundations, the report will be presented to the governor, Legislature and other state officials.

After An Especially Long Lockdown, San Bernardino Schools Are Set To Reopen |
On Monday, when a new school year begins in San Bernardino, Earl Benjamin’s son will set foot inside a classroom for the first time since March 2020. His son, a high school senior, has been stuck at home with his video games longer than most Southern California students. The San Bernardino City Unified School District kept campuses closed through all of last school year — even in the spring, when all but a handful of school districts in the region resumed in-person classes.
