Face mask mandate in schools raises ire, praise and confusion in Orange County
With schools about to re-open and face-to-face instruction set to resume, school officials throughout Orange County are hearing from parents who hold opposing views about a state mandate that requires most students, teachers and staff to wear masks when indoors at a California public school. On one side are parents who welcome the safety of masks, especially with COVID-19 spiking again in Southern California and around the country.

After a long wait, it’s football season again at Godinez
The Grizzlies held their first practice since the 2019 season, and that was a victory of sorts after what happened in 2020. Monday was the first day in nearly two years that the Godinez football team practiced in helmets and shoulder pads. The Grizzlies had completed the required three-day conditioning period last week, so they were able to put on their protective gear for a full practice.

Swain Elementary School to be repurposed by Cypress district
Vacant for about 11 years after being shut down because of low enrollment, Swain Elementary School’s buildings and grounds are being put back into use by the Cypress School District. But there’s a catch: the property will no longer function as a school. Instead, it’ll be a center for the district’s Maintenance, Operations, Transportation and Technology Department, also known as MOTT.

The new state school mask rule doesn’t faze many students. It’s ‘second nature’ now
If past months and the first days of the new year are any indication of how students are dealing with the latest coronavirus school rule, many say they are largely over it. They have adjusted to the discomfort and would much rather be in school with their friends than at home on a computer.

National polarized politics filtering down to local school board meetings
If your local school board meetings are becoming more uncivil and politicized, you’re not alone. They appear part of a national trend. “Board meetings, far from being quiet, by-the-books affairs, have turned into to ground zero of the nation’s political and cultural debates,” writes Education Week writer Stephen Sawchuk in an analysis.

Lack of extensive data hampers understanding of pandemic’s impact, researchers say
Eleven of the nation’s leading education researchers who evaluated a dozen studies of student performance during the pandemic have concluded that students “lagged pre-pandemic expectations by an amount roughly equivalent to several months of learning in a typical year.” Their report, issued last week by the Seattle-based Center on Reinventing Public Education, corroborated the loss of learning documented in end-of-school test results released by the consulting firm McKinsey and the assessment organization NWEA.

COVID hits 23 in California schools, days after reopening
Two neighboring San Francisco Bay Area school districts on Monday reported 23 coronavirus infections among students and staff, just days after in-person classes resumed. Students returned to classrooms at Brentwood Union School District’s 11 schools last Wednesday. As of this week, the district has already recorded 13 coronavirus cases in elementary schools and another 10 in high schools, the Mercury News reported. Superintendent Dana Eaton said contact tracing has determined none of the elementary school students with COVID-19 contracted it at school. Liberty Union High School District Superintendent Eric Volta said contact tracing was still underway for the high school students.
