Superintendents in Orange County see ethnic studies as key to learning and to a just society |
Four Orange County school superintendents offered their ideas on ethnic studies this week, explaining why their districts are offering courses that some parents praise as much-needed and others criticize as liberal indoctrination. In an online forum hosted by the Orange County Department of Education Wednesday, July 21, the superintendents and other educators said students, and society, benefit by studying versions of American history and culture that incorporate multicultural points of view. They also took some pointed questions.

CUSD Discusses Student Chromebook Project |
Capistrano Unified School District students have individually received and worked on Chromebook laptops during the COVID-19 pandemic—a project CUSD staff reviewed during a Board of Trustees meeting on Wednesday, July 21. Chromebooks are becoming increasingly popular tools for students in school districts throughout the country. CUSD intended to give Chromebooks to students for school use before the COVID-19 pandemic, and the onset of distance learning during the health crisis accelerated those plans. “The CARES Act really gave us a fantastic opportunity to do just that,” said CUSD Chief Technology Officer Sean Rozell, in reference to funding sources.

Laguna Beach USD school bus yard eyed for potential housing site |
The Laguna Beach Unified School District Board of Education and City Council discussed adding the school bus yard as a possible site for new housing at a joint meeting on July 15. “As everyone’s aware here, we’re very landlocked here in Laguna Beach,” Assistant Superintendent Jeff Dixon said. “So finding additional land to develop more units is fairly difficult. But they were very creative in their analysis of the city. And what they came up with was potential sites to add affordable housing.”

Orange County school boards grapple with state's student mask mandate |
As K-12 students prepare to go back to school, local school boards are grappling with implementing the state's new mask mandate, and it could get contentious.
With the California Dept. of Public Health requiring students to wear masks in classrooms, the president of an Orange County school board is advocating for local control over the student mask requirement.
