Q&A: With updated coronavirus measures in place, here’s what the new school year will look like for LAUSD |
When Los Angeles Unified students return to campuses a month from now, staff and students, with some exceptions, will be expected to wear a mask indoors, as they did when schools reopened in the spring. But those who are fully vaccinated will no longer have to undergo regular COVID-19 testing, a major departure from district protocols in the spring when all staff and students on campus were to be tested weekly.
And student athletes will be back to their regular sports schedules this fall.

More California schools adding yoga to school day |
To help students relax, some California schools are adding something new — that’s actually very old — to the daily routine: yoga. The ancient practice of stretching and breathing, often combined with meditation and mindfulness, is increasingly popular in physical education classes and after-school programs for students of all ages. Teachers say it helps students cope with stress and build physical and mental strength, especially valuable skills as students return to campus after more than a year of remote learning.

Q&A: My conversation with U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona |
It’s those small connections — real and perceived — that can make a classroom feel inviting for students. It is, in part, why Cardona visited Fairfax High School in Los Angeles — to promote building positive relationships through mentorship and community volunteering, which is at the center of the Ready Set initiative, launched by the Creative Artists Agency Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education.
Cardona sat down with EdSource for a brief chat to talk about the pressing issues in education facing California and the nation as schools slowly emerge from a pandemic that continues to evolve.

Federal Judge Rules Against DACA Program But Current Recipients Are Safe For Now |
A federal district judge in Texas has ruled against the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, striking a blow to the Obama-era policy that has protected more than 800,000 young undocumented immigrants from deportation since 2012.
The largely expected decision leaves the fate of thousands of the program's beneficiaries, known as DREAMers, in the hands of Congress, the Biden administration and a Supreme Court where conservatives hold a 6-3 majority.
U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen ruled in favor of nine conservative-led states, including Texas, blocking the Biden administration from accepting new DACA applicants – saying the program is not legal.

California Launches Largest Free School Lunch Program In US |
When classrooms in California reopen for the fall term, all 6.2 million public school students will have the option to eat school meals for free, regardless of their family’s income. The undertaking, made possible by an unexpected budget surplus, will be the largest free student lunch program in the country. School officials, lawmakers, anti-hunger organizations and parents are applauding it as a pioneering way to prevent the stigma of accepting free lunches and feed more hungry children.
