O.C. Ed Department forum tries to dispel myths about ethnic studies, critical race theory
As critical race theory — the examination of institutions through a lens of racism and inequality — becomes a nationwide political flashpoint, ongoing efforts by schools to promote inclusivity, in part, by offering ethnic studies courses have come under fire. Now, county education officials are attempting to separate fact from fiction by hosting discussions to update the public on what is and isn’t being taught in local classrooms. In a virtual colloquium Wednesday hosted by the Orange County Department of Education, scholars and educators shed light on the origins of a recently approved statewide model curriculum for teaching ethnic studies in public schools.

When Districts ‘Fire’ Coaches, They Often Keep Them on as Teachers
Across the region, school administrators have fired coaches after finding they acted inappropriately or abused their roles as student mentors, while retaining them as teachers and leaving them accessible to students. Firing an employee from as a coach is easier than firing them as a teacher, because employee union-negotiated collective bargaining agreements afford teachers due process rights that aren’t extended to coaches.

Biden says kids under 12 could be eligible for COVID vaccines in weeks. That's not likely.
President Joe Biden is optimistic that vaccines for children under 12 years old could be available as early as August. Biden made the statement during a town hall in Cincinnati on Wednesday that was hosted by CNN. After speaking with scientists, Biden said he wasn't promised a specific date, but did have an expectation. That's an unlikely timeline. Trials began in March for the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for younger children. The results of the trials are expected in the fall, not within weeks.

How California plans to deter costly special education disputes
The threatened deluge of post-pandemic special education litigation may be averted — or at least minimized— by a new initiative in California encouraging parents and schools to resolve disputes before heading to court. The state budget, signed Friday by Gov. Gavin Newsom, sets aside $100 million for resolving special education conflicts between parents and school districts, which escalated during remote learning.

Hugs as California public school returns to class in person
There was pumping music, dancing teachers and lots of hugs as one of the first public schools in California opened fully to in-person learning Wednesday, marking a major milestone in the fight to return to normalcy in the nation’s most populated state, though the masked students served as a reminder that the coronavirus pandemic is still far from over. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond welcomed students at Enrique S. Camarena Elementary School in Chula Vista, south of San Diego near the Mexican border.
