CUSD Trustees Approve Resolution on School Mask Guidance
In an effort to get the California Department of Public Health’s attention, the Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees approved a symbolic resolution Wednesday urging a change in mask guidance for people on school campuses—effectively requesting masks be optional, particularly for students. Students, teachers, and school staff have been required to wear masks while indoors on campus during the COVID-19 pandemic. Whether they are required to do so is set by CDPH guidelines, and the school district has no jurisdiction on the matter.

Conejo Unified pushes against misinformation as 'Teen Talk' curriculum protest continues
Despite its approval earlier in the month, the Teen Talk curriculum continued to take fire from a majority of public speakers during Conejo Valley Unified School District's June 15 meeting. They asked why parents couldn't review the student curriculum before adoption and complained parents should have been given the actual content and then surveyed for their input, among other criticisms.

San Diego Unified Ethnic Studies Expansion Sparks Debate Over How Race Taught In Schools
Earlier this week, the San Diego Unified School Board unanimously approved a plan that will integrate anti-racism and ethnic studies education into its curriculum. The vote was preceded by a protest of roughly two dozen people who were opposed to the effort — with some equating the new curriculum to components of critical race theory. This expansion of ethnic studies comes at a time of heightened racial awareness in San Diego, where many are considering how racism should be confronted in the classroom — especially after several racist incidents at local high schools.

Labor shortage complicates Newsom's plan for universal pre-K in California
Gov. Gavin Newsom has pitched an ambitious expansion of child care and pre-kindergarten in California, but a severe labor shortage in early education — worsened by the pandemic — threatens to thwart his agenda. In his budget blueprint last month, Newsom proposed funding 100,000 new subsidized child care slots for lower income families and a year of free public pre-K, or "transitional kindergarten," for every 4-year-old in the state. But almost immediately after the announcement, the reality set in: There simply aren't enough teachers.
