O.C. Ed Board balks at punishing Costa Mesa charter school for possible violations
A Costa Mesa charter school has until July 7 to demonstrate how it will correct several operational indiscretions being investigated by county education officials as potential violations, even as the Orange County Board of Education hesitates to take punitive action. Officials say the International School for Science and Culture overreported its enrollment, operated at an improperly zoned site and charged fees for instruction.

A recent survey by AltaMed Health Services and Great Public Schools Now found that the educational experiences and psychological wellbeing of residents in the southeast Los Angeles region of L.A. County were impacted at higher rates due to pre-existing “social determinants of health that keep them marginalized.”

Coronado School Board Fires Basketball Coach Following Tortilla-Throwing Incident
The Coronado Unified School District Governing Board voted unanimously Tuesday night to fire Coronado High School boys' basketball coach JD Laaperi, three days after fans threw tortillas at the opposing team following a championship game. The vote was taken behind closed doors and the board did not comment further. Coronado defeated Escondido's Orange Glen High School 60-57 Saturday for the California Interscholastic Federation Southern California Boys' Basketball Division 4-A regional championship.

LAUSD Board approves labor deal with teachers for fall campus instruction
The Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education approved a labor agreement Tuesday with its teachers union for a return to traditional in-person instruction for the 2021-22 school year. The union, United Teachers Los Angeles, announced Thursday that after three days of voting, its membership overwhelming approved the proposed agreement, with 94% voting in favor.
