Orange County student competes in Scripps National Spelling Bee
With hundreds of guests in attendance and broadcast cameras recording for millions of viewers across the country, 14-year-old student Aaron Lim represented Orange County in National Harbor, Maryland as he competed in the 2023 Scripps National Spelling Bee on Wednesday. The eighth-grader from El Rancho Charter School in Anaheim spelled the words “cephalopod,” “seraphic” and “muckraker” perfectly before getting eliminated in the fourth round with the word “ovination,” mistakenly adding an extra “a” in the word.

Turning The Page on Low Literacy Rates in Orange County
People read menus, billboards, magazines and social media every single day. But for many adults, it’s not that easy. More than 43 million adults across America cannot read above a third grade level, according to Prosperity for America. In Orange County, it’s estimated that 1 in 4 adults, or 400,000 adults, read only at a basic or below-basic level. For many, local adult literacy programs like the county government’s library program – OC Read – can help.

Bolstered by Miami track record, Carvalho revamps LAUSD Primary Promise reading program
Alberto Carvalho came to Los Angeles Unified last year having delivered impressive academic results at the helm of Miami-Dade, another large urban district grappling with myriad challenges. Many of the changes the superintendent is pushing at LAUSD, such as restructuring the Primary Promise reading initiative, jibe with this track record in Miami.

Poll: Americans say teachers are underpaid, about half of Republicans oppose book bans
We've all seen the headlines – about book bans, school board shoutfests and new laws to limit how teachers can talk about gender identity or racism. America is deeply divided, and those fissures are ripping through classrooms – with teachers trapped straddling the chasms. But are parents, teachers and the public feeling as divided as the headlines make it seem?

Temecula Valley school board votes 3-2 to reject new curriculum over Harvey Milk inclusion
A Temecula Valley school board meeting last month ended in frustration for educators and community members in attendance. The frustration was over the 3-2 vote opposing the adoption of new social studies curriculum for Temecula Valley Unified School District elementary schools. The decision could leave 11,397 students without a textbook next year. School board members, Dr. Joseph Komrosky, Jennifer Wiersma and Danny Gonzalez opposed the inclusion of gay rights activist Harvey Milk in the supplemental material used by teachers, even though Milk is not in the 4th grade textbook himself.

Florida teen Dev Shah wins National Spelling Bee
Fifteen months ago, Dev Shah spent a miserable five hours spelling outdoors in chilly, windy, damp conditions at a supersize regional competition in Orlando, Florida, only to fall short of his dream of returning to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. "Despondent is the right word," Dev said. "I just didn't know if I wanted to keep continuing." Look at him now. Dev's winning word was "psammophile," a layup for a speller of his caliber.
