Five Southern California students are trying to spell their way to the national spelling bee crown this week. Aaron Lim is an eighth grader at El Rancho Charter School in Anaheim. He won the Orange County Spelling Bee in March. In the third round of the preliminaries, Lim correctly spelled “muckraker,” which means “to search out and publicly expose real or apparent misconduct of a prominent individual or business,” earning him a spot in the quarterfinals.

Transgender teacher’s Pride flag burned at Saticoy Elementary, where protests escalate
A North Hollywood elementary school already dealing with parental protests over an upcoming Pride assembly was further aggrieved after a transgender teacher’s Pride flag was burned by a campus intruder, police and sources said. The angst at Saticoy Elementary School has ratcheted up since parents created an Instagram account on May 16 protesting the school’s Pride month assembly, during which administrators planned to talk about families with gay parents. Some parents planned to keep their children home, and others posted furiously about teaching “sexuality” in schools.

Rally set for embattled Temecula Valley High drama teacher
Temecula Valley High School drama students are preparing to rally in support of their teacher, who was accused by a parent and a pastor of assigning a sexually explicit and inappropriate play. Temecula mother Tracy Nolasco told the school board May 16 that her sophomore daughter was told she had to read “Angels in America,” or else she would “fail.” The Pulitzer Prize-winning play explores the AIDS epidemic along with religion, race, drug use and homosexuality. Murrieta pastor Tim Thompson echoed her concerns, asked for the teacher to be fired and said the district needed a new policy to prevent such occurrences.

Teachers who claim gender equality may show bias against girls, study suggests
Math teachers who believe women no longer face discrimination tend to be biased against girls’ ability in math, according to an experiment conducted with over 400 math teachers across the United States, as The 74 reported. The findings were published in a peer-reviewed article that appeared in April 2023 in the International Journal of STEM Education. In this experiment, teachers were asked to evaluate a set of student solutions to math problems. The teachers didn’t know that gender and race specific names, such as Tanisha and Connor, had been randomly assigned to the solutions. The idea was to see if the teachers had any unconscious biases, as The 74 reported.
