Orange County Tallied 722 Total Homeless Kids Last Year, Real Number May Be 30,000 |
Homelessness has become a critical measure of school performance in Orange County – fueling absences, dropouts, low test scores and limited literacy.
And for one Anaheim high school teacher, it’s gotten to a point where academics take the back seat. “I want to make sure that this student is eating, that the student does not show any signs of depression, or, you know, suicidal tendencies,” said Lizzette Barrios-Gracian, who taught at Gilbert High School this past school year in the Anaheim Union High School District.

Downtown San Diego homeless encampments impacting students who walk to school |

Every school day, twice a day, students who attend Perkins Elementary are forced to walk on the streets to get to and from school due to homeless encampments on Newton Avenue and Beardsley Street, according to school leaders and parents. |

The terrible truth: Current solutions to COVID learning loss are doomed to fail |
Most of the programs school districts have implemented to address COVID learning loss are doomed to fail. Despite well-intended and rapid responses, solutions such as tutoring or summer school will miss their goals. Existing policies have failed to consider the unique needs of the students these services seek to help, and thus are destined to waste vast sums of relief funding in pursuit of an impossible goal. How do we know this? Recent research from our team at the Center for Research on Education Outcomes (CREDO) at Stanford University looked at learning patterns in 16 states to see how recovery efforts will affect students’ academic careers. |
