CAPISTRANO DISPATCH

Serra High Changes Name Back to Capistrano Union High School
Serra High School is reverting to its original name of Capistrano Union High School, after the Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees approved the renaming during an April 21 meeting. The renaming has been in the works since last year, when Trustee Gila Jones originally brought up the matter following scrutiny of Father Junipero Serra, the school’s namesake. The campus is a continuation school in San Juan Capistrano. The school originally opened in 1920 as Capistrano Union High School and became Serra High School in 1981. The campus is separate from JSerra Catholic High School, also in San Juan.

A California program spent millions on devices for distance learning. Here’s where it went
For the first time ever, nearly 95% of California families say their kids have personal computing devices that they can use for school. But even after a year of distance learning, thousands of students still don’t have a computer or access to the internet at home. After schools had to close their buildings last spring due to Covid-19, most pivoted online, forcing districts and state officials to rapidly shore up resources for extra computers and Wi-Fi hot spots for students who didn’t have their own devices or internet access at home.

Schools Are Deciding What The New CDC Mask Guidelines Mean For The Classroom
This week has brought a few dizzying updates to the year-long school-reopening story. In a surprise move, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention changed its COVID-19 safety guidance, telling people who have been fully vaccinated that, with some exceptions, they can now gather indoors as well as outside without face masks or social distancing. The announcement came just one day after the CDC also gave the green light for children ages 12 to 15 to begin receiving the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. What does all of this mean for schools? It's complicated.

Experts Say Arts Education Should Be Emphasized As Students Return To Classrooms
For Barbara LeRoy, one silver lining to teaching at home through the pandemic was having the chance to play her ukulele to keep students engaged during distance learning. Last month when she went back to part-time in-person teaching at Joseph Casillas Elementary in the Chula Vista Elementary School District, the ukelele came with her. Now it’s helping her students re-adapt to the classroom.
