Los Alamitos school board approves social justice standards, even as opponents express frustration
Early Wednesday morning, May 12, nearing the end of a six-hour meeting, the Los Alamitos Unified School District board unanimously approved “social justice” teaching standards, a concept that in recent months has become a lightning rod for controversy. And although school officials followed the police department’s advice to hold the meeting online, the shuttered district office still attracted face-to-face interaction. About 100 people gathered outside prior to the teleconferenced meeting, most protesting against the new guidelines.

Should California offer transitional kindergarten to all 4-year-olds
Early childhood advocates, lawmakers and the governor are pushing to gradually expand transitional kindergarten (TK) to all the state’s 4-year-olds. But the moves are raising issues, such as the viability of the child care system and whether expanded TK might be too academic for younger 4-year-olds.

California governor proposes public school ‘transformation’
California Gov. Gavin Newsom proposed a “total transformation” of public schools in America’s largest state Wednesday by offering pre-kindergarten to all 4-year-olds, opening up college savings accounts for low-income students and offering universal after-school care in disadvantaged communities. Newsom announced the measures as part of a broad new education spending package made possible by the state’s surprise budget surplus. The surplus means California has about $93.7 billion for public education this year, based on a voter-approved law. That’s $36 billion more than last year and $17.7 billion more than the governor’s initial estimate in January.

As public school enrollment declines, some parents switch to private
Rewind just a few months, and Isaiah Leslie’s living room looked very different, having blended work-from-home with supervising school-from-home for his two children. Leslie watched as his 12 year old son and 9 year old daughter struggled adjusting to Zoom classes, however, especially his son. When some of the children of Leslie’s friends returned to classes because their private schools received state waivers, Leslie and his wife began to consider whether they should pull their kids from the public system and go private.
