Children of color aren't getting early intervention some need. Why are there so many barriers?
By the time her daughter turned 3, Ramona Santos Torres noticed something not quite right about the child’s speech. The toddler babbled, but nothing she said was intelligible. She rarely made eye contact with other people. Most babies, Santos Torres knew, start to utter some recognizable words before they reach the age of 2.

Fentanyl crisis: Fury grows over Bay Area school districts that still aren’t ready to save an overdosing student
As state and local officials voice growing concern about the fentanyl crisis — and the U.S. attorney general says the Justice Department is focusing “enormous urgency” on the deadly drug — high schools in nearly a dozen Bay Area districts are still not prepared to save an overdosing student, according to a survey by the Bay Area News Group. The news organization found 36% of the 33 districts that responded said they have yet to train teachers and staff to recognize the signs of fentanyl overdoses. About 27% have not made the lifesaving drug Narcan readily available in schools, even after Bay Area educators and school nurses have used the nasal spray to revive students at least four times this school year.

The Assistance League of Laguna Beach’s Early Intervention Program is a unique program for families with developmentally delayed infants.

California offers bipartisan road map for protecting kids online even as Big Tech fights back
In California, a Democrat and a Republican figured out how to pass the country’s toughest online privacy law protecting kids. The law, modeled after legislation in the United Kingdom, will ban websites from profiling users in California under age 18, tracking their locations, or nudging them to provide personal information. It will also require online services to automatically put privacy settings at their highest levels on sites that kids access when the law goes into effect next year.

Marin high schools promote equity with prom attire
Across Marin County, elegant dresses, stylish shoes and sharp tuxedos will be ready for high school proms this spring — all for free. The formalwear, both new or lightly used, is being assembled to level the playing field for students. “We felt it was important that every student gets the opportunity to attend the prom,” said Liv Villanova, a Redwood High School student who is organizing the school’s new “Prom Boutique” at the Village at Corte Madera. “Money should not be a reason they can’t attend.”
