OCDE supports districts’ efforts in preparing students for success with social-emotional learning strategies |
Juggling a myriad of tasks and to-do lists on a daily basis becomes second nature for adults, but the balancing act can be overwhelming for children as they navigate life on and off campus. Much of multi-tasking is learning how to think strategically, planning ahead and following through. It’s a tall order for many young students and perhaps still a challenge for adults as well. |

People that have been perceived as being in opposite corners over how to teach reading in California released a joint paper Thursday agreeing that foundational reading skills like phonics, vocabulary and comprehension should be taught explicitly and systematically to all students. And children who are learning English as a second language, who make up 1 in 4 first graders in California, also need lessons to practice speaking and listening in English, and to make connections with other languages they know. |

Providence uses lifesaving robots to get high schoolers excited about medicine |
The United States is facing a shortage of medical workers nationwide, but doctors at Providence Holy Cross in Mission Hills say that given the rate of innovation, now is the most exciting time to enter the field. Case in point: the Da Vinci Xi surgical robot.
This four-armed robotic work of art allows surgeons to complete delicate, precise and complex operations that are minimally invasive. Providence invited top calculus and physics student from nearby Alemany High School to see the robot for themselves.
