Nearly $15 million in mental health grants going to Lemon Grove, La Mesa-Spring Valley school districts
Two East County school districts have been awarded grants totaling nearly $15 million to help support students with mental health needs. The grants are from the U.S. Department of Education as part of the School-Based Mental Health Services Program. The two districts are among nine California school districts receiving grants, and among just 68 nationwide.

Can common ground be found on teaching reading in California?
People that have been perceived as being in opposite corners over how to teach reading in California released a joint paper Thursday agreeing that foundational reading skills like phonics, vocabulary and comprehension should be taught explicitly and systematically to all students. And children who are learning English as a second language, who make up 1 in 4 first graders in California, also need lessons to practice speaking and listening in English, and to make connections with other languages they know.

Providence uses lifesaving robots to get high schoolers excited about medicine
The United States is facing a shortage of medical workers nationwide, but doctors at Providence Holy Cross in Mission Hills say that given the rate of innovation, now is the most exciting time to enter the field. Case in point: the Da Vinci Xi surgical robot. This four-armed robotic work of art allows surgeons to complete delicate, precise and complex operations that are minimally invasive. Providence invited top calculus and physics student from nearby Alemany High School to see the robot for themselves.

LA Unified Braces For Strike By Union With 30K School Staff Members
Officials in the Los Angeles Unified School District say they're getting ready for a possible strike by thousands of cafeteria workers, bus drivers, custodians, special ed assistants and others. Service Employees International Union Local 99 represents more than 30,000 workers in LAUSD. Those workers announced plans this week to cancel their contract as labor talks over a new deal stall.
