Multilingualism a growing skill among OC students
California’s schools are quickly realizing the benefits of helping students become fluent in a second language besides English. It’s true in Orange County also where this growing trend can be seen in the rapid increase of students graduating with a State Seal of Biliteracy stamped on their diplomas.

Back-to-school smoking: Juul Labs e-cigarette sales growth vexes teachers
At Jonathan Law High School, a mysteriously large number of students last year spent copious amounts of time in the bathroom. Noticing students were disappearing for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, teachers at the Milford, Connecticut school brought the issue to principal Fran Thompson. The bathrooms would become "little tent cities," Thompson said, with kids bringing blankets and sitting on the sinks.

'No easy answers:' School violence skyrockets across USA, report finds
Violent incidents in schools increased 113 percent during the past school year, a new study finds. Schools saw 279 violent incidents during the 2017-18 school year, up from 131 the previous year, according to a study by the Educator's School Safety Network, a national non-profit school safety organization.

California gets high grade in measuring teachers’ reading instruction skills
California is one of 11 states that “thoroughly tests candidates’ knowledge of the science of reading,” according to a new 50-state analysis released by the National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ). The report seemingly undercuts a lawsuit that a public interest law firm has filed against the state and top education officials for failing to effectively teach reading.

Community colleges try new ‘pathway’ to student success
California’s community colleges are embarking on the most far-reaching reform they have ever adopted, in a bid to tackle their biggest challenge: to improve on historically low rates of student graduation and transfers to 4-year colleges and universities. Lawmakers allocated $150 million over the last year to put in place the approach, known as “Guided Pathways.”

CA joins international move to new braille system
Unified English Braille, internationally recognized as the standard literacy medium for the blind since 2012, has also formally been recognized in California schools under legislation newly signed by the governor. The prior version most used throughout the U.S., known as English Braille, had fallen into some disfavor in the early 1990s because of its inability to adapt to a changing communication landscape.

As students prepare to go back to school, more and more parents are thinking about school safety. A recent poll found 34 percent of parents fear for their child's physical safety at school. That's almost triple the number of parents from 2013. And yet schools are among the safest places for kids. According to one study, shooting incidents involving students have actually gone down since the 1990s.
