As California schools wait for state bond money, districts fume at sluggish payouts |
It’s been two years since voters passed a $9 billion bond to renovate and modernize the state’s public schools and community colleges, yet classrooms across California are still waiting for the vast majority of that money. Less than 20 percent of the $7 billion in the Proposition 51 bond for the state’s K-12 schools has been allocated, despite a $3.5 billion backlog of construction projects waiting for funding. |

Michigan and California students argue a constitutional right to literacy |
When Jamarria Hall strode into Osborn High in Detroit his freshman year, the signs of decay were everywhere: buckets in the hallways to catch leaking water, rotting ceiling tiles, vermin that crisscrossed classrooms. In the neglected school, students never got textbooks to take home, and Hall and his classmates went long stretches — sometimes months — with substitute teachers who did little more than supervise students. |

The ‘discipline gap’ for blacks in California schools remains as wide as ever |
Between 2011 and 2017, out-of-school suspensions in California fell 46 percent, and the rate of suspensions dropped by more than a third. That students are suspended less frequently is welcome news for civil rights advocates who’ve long been concerned about the fact that certain groups — black students, foster youth, and students with disabilities, in particular — are far more likely to face suspension than their peers. This disparity is often referred to as the discipline gap. |

Amazon partners with community colleges, high schools to offer cloud-computing certificate |
The 15-credit certificate program — offered through the California Cloud Workforce Project — targets in-demand cloud-computing skills. Under the initiative, each participating community college is partnering with at least one high school in the greater L.A. area, some of which are in economically disadvantaged areas. Students who enroll in the program will also have access to workshops and Amazon Web Services training sessions. |

How To Make A Civics Education Stick |
How do you teach kids to be active participants in government? Or to tell the difference between real news and fake news? In their last legislative sessions, 27 states considered bills or other proposals that aim to answer these questions. Many of those proposals are rooted in popular ideas about the best ways to teach civics, including when kids should start, what they should learn and how to apply those lessons. Here's a look at some of those concepts. |

It's The First Day Of School — A Refresher On How To Drive Safe Around Kids |
Welcome back, kids. Today's the first day back for students in the Los Angeles Unified School District. That means if there's ever a time to start paying attention to the road (not that you didn't before), this is that time. In the past decade, about one-third of child pedestrian fatalities occurred between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., according to the American Automobile Association of Southern California. |
