The 20 fees public schools can legally charge
Throughout the school year, students and parents may occasionally be asked to pay fees or contribute for extras, including field trips. Split roll tax measure relaunched to 2020 ballot
In general, the proposed measure would eliminate the protections for commercial real estate while leaving them in place for residential property. If approved, supporters say, the split roll would generate between $6 billion to $10 billion for public services. Led by the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California, the California Federation of Teachers, the League of Women Voters of California and PICO California, the coalition sponsoring the petition drive had originally intended to put their initiative on this November ballot.

Require ethnic studies to graduate high school? California inches closer to the idea
This week the Legislature—which had been considering a bill to make California the first state to require ethnic studies for high school graduation—backed away from creating such a statewide mandate, citing costs estimated to top $400 million. Sponsors settled on a pilot program instead. The pilot would cover 10 to 15 school districts across the state that will opt in to have ethnic studies as a graduation requirement.
