Following successful first season, Orange County’s e-sports league is ready to go national
Orange County’s high school e-sports league is leveling up. After a successful pilot season that crowned a Fountain Valley High team as its first champion, OC’s competitive gaming league is changing its name to the North America Scholastic Esports Federation and will focus on helping schools across the country establish their own scholastic leagues and tournaments.

$3 million aimed at LA schools to boost attendance, close achievement gap
Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Austin Beutner and a group of local community partners and foundations this week announced the launch of a multimillion-dollar fund with an aim of improving student achievement and engaging the community. The Fund for Equity and Excellence’s initial funding of just over $3 million will be increased over time through the addition of other partners and increased commitments by the initial partners, LAUSD officials said.

San Diego Unified Will Face Millions More in Budget Cuts Next Year
San Diego Unified School District trustees last week adopted a largely balanced $1.33 billion operating budget for the 2018-19 school year, but they expect to grapple with nearly $41 million in budget cuts next year, plus at least $35 million more the year after.

‘Access to Literacy’ Is Not a Constitutional Right, Judge in Detroit Rules
Do students at poorly performing schools have a constitutional right to a better education? On Friday, a Federal District Court judge in Michigan decided that they did not when he dismissed a class-action lawsuit filed by students at troubled schools in Detroit. The suit, filed in September 2016, argued that students at some of the city’s most underperforming schools — serving mostly racial minorities — had been denied “access to literacy” because of underfunding, mismanagement and discrimination.

Students at Moreno Valley’s Valley View High watch experiment lift off into space
Four Valley View High School students watched recently as their project launched to the International Space Station as part of the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program Mission 12. They viewed the launch Friday, June 29, from the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., where they also presented their project, “Effect of Microgravity on Soybean Germination,” at the Student Spaceflight national conference.

Work less, study more: California will give grants to community college students attending full-time
In an effort to get students to earn degrees in two or four years, California will give up to $4,000 in grants to community college students who take a full 15-hour course load starting this fall.
