OCDE, partners lauded for efforts to help foster youth apply for financial aid |
Financial aid can be the difference-maker for those considering college. That’s why students of all backgrounds are encouraged to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, which determines eligibility for grants, fee-waivers and low-interest loans. But not all students know to pursue these resources, and some groups have been historically underrepresented in the pool of applicants — including foster youth. |

Secret Service urges U.S. schools to set up 'threat teams' to prevent shootings |
The Secret Service is urging U.S. schools to establish teams that can assess threats and prevent shootings such as the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida that left 17 people dead. The report was prepared by the National Threat Assessment Center in an effort launched after the Feb. 14 Parkland shooting. |

California officials confident they’ve cut deal in dispute over federal education law |
California’s State Board of Education is a signature away from finally complying with the nation’s main education law for public schools, ending a year of protracted disagreement between Sacramento and Washington. But while moving forward on the federal Every Student Succeeds Act, the board also voted on Wednesday to further study how the state determines whether its students are improving based on standardized tests. |

Battle ramps up to convince California school employees to withhold union fees |
Backers of the landmark lawsuit that has the potential to substantially diminish the power of public employee unions in California and nationally are not sitting back reveling in the victory they won on the Supreme Court late last month. The divided ruling in Janus v. American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees upended the four-decade legal precedent allowing unions to levy collective bargaining fees on employees who have chosen not to belong to their union, even though they may benefit from labor contracts bargained on their behalf. |
