Summer vacation ends for hundreds of students at three OC schools
While scores of students across Orange County are hitting the beach, traveling on summer trips, or just sleeping through the morning during, hundreds of students at three Anaheim Elementary School District were the firsts this week to start new 2018-19 school year. Students at Edison, Mann and Ponderosa Elementary started classes Tuesday. These schools have year-round, multi-track schedules.

Newport-Mesa school district drops plan to drop accelerated math classes
A Newport-Mesa Unified School District plan to eliminate some accelerated math classes that met with parent backlash has been postponed, but a new curriculum for teaching math will still be instituted. The district considered dropping the intermediate school math courses that consolidate two school years of math into one out of a desire to provide “more appropriately balanced academics and social and emotional health” for students, said Annette Franco, a spokeswoman for the district.

OUSD briefs: Interact and Chemical Society clubs honor seniors at Villa Park High
The Villa Park High School 12th annual Rotary Interact and sixth annual American Chemical Society Recognition and Installation were recently held in a combined ceremony. VPHS chemistry teacher Linda Bartrom is an advisor to both the Interact Club and the American Chemical Society Club on campus.

Newport-Mesa to gather input from parents on middle school math offerings
The Newport-Mesa Unified School District will host parent meetings this summer to collect public input on plans to modify how math classes are offered to middle school students. A meeting is tentatively scheduled for Aug. 22 with two more in September. A school board study session will take place in the fall.

During her three-year contract, Olson will receive a $234,289 annual salary, a $650 monthly transportation allowance, and a $100 monthly communications allowance, according to the employment agreement.

The California Public Employees’ Retirement Fund reported on July 12, 2018, that it had a more than 8 percent investment return for the 2017-18 fiscal year. California’s largest public pension fund is now 71 percent funded.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos signs off: California's plan finally satisfies federal law
U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos approved California’s plan for meeting requirements of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act on Thursday, just one day after the State Board of Education sent to Washington its third version of the state plan. DeVos’ approval was expected, although it may have come faster than state officials had anticipated.
