Park honoring Mendez v. Westminster case awarded $1.29 million state grant |
California State Parks has awarded a $1.29 million grant to the City of Westminster to construct a park and memorial honoring Gonzalo and Felicitas Mendez, plaintiffs in the historic Mendez v. Westminster civil rights case. The park, to be located along Westminster Boulevard at Olive Street, will feature a monument created by artist Ignacio Gomez. Statues will depict Gonzalo and Felicitas Mendez, who in 1943 sought to enroll their daughter Sylvia and sons Geronimo and Gonzalo, Jr. at Westminster’s 17th Street School, then known as “the white school.” Their children were turned away and told to go to Hoover Elementary, a segregated campus for students of Mexican heritage.

Riverside school investigates video of students chanting racial slur |
Administrators at Amelia Earhart Middle School in Riverside are investigating a short video that appears to show students on campus chanting a racial slur. Multiple videos provided by a student, each several seconds long, show one student calling out the first syllable of the N-word and a crowd chanting the second syllable.
The videos, which show Earhart students, are being spread by other students on social media, according to Aniyah Harris, an 8th grader at the school.

Schools Are Embracing Mindfulness, But Practice Doesn't Always Make Perfect |
One in 5 American children struggles with anxiety, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, and almost half experience at least one serious stressor at home — like divorce, poverty or a parent's addiction — according to the nonprofit Child Trends.
To help students cope, a growing number of schools like Warner are turning to mindfulness. Its boosters claim all kinds of benefits, and there is research to back them up. But mindfulness in schools can mean many different things, and the explosion of interest has some researchers and proponents advising caution.
