Orange Unified’s science centers will open next school year at high schools |
Students and teachers in Orange Unified School District’s four high schools should move into their new science buildings during the next school year – district officials say the construction projects remain on time and on budget. Villa Park High on Thursday, Feb. 20, had a “topping off” ceremony – installing the last beam at the top of the skeleton that will become the $45.2 million building. The school was the third of the four to celebrate the halfway point in the construction of its science center, with only Canyon High to follow.

Firm hired to referee El Rancho meetings abruptly quits |
The law firm hired to keep the peace at El Rancho Unified’s board meetings has resigned after just two partial sessions, the last of which ended abruptly when two board members walked off the dais in protest. Los Angeles-based law firm Olivarez Madruga Lemieux O’Neill was hired to be the district’s parliamentarian on Feb. 4. The firm signed a $10,000 contract to play referee and keep the board in compliance with state laws during public meetings.

The Developer Bonus Tucked Inside This Ballot's Prop. 13 (School Bonds, Not Property Taxes) |
California voters are being asked to approve a controversial measure making it easier for developers to build apartment buildings within a half-mile of public transit.
Most will think they're only voting on whether the state should borrow more money to fix broken air conditioners in schools. On its face this new Proposition 13 — the only statewide ballot measure to appear on the ballot for California's March 3 presidential primary — asks voters for $15 billion in state bonds to finance the construction and renovation of California K-12 schools and public universities.

Sweetwater School Board Approves Potential Layoffs To Close Budget Deficit |
Sweetwater Union High School District's school board on Tuesday approved a proposal to layoff of more than 200 employees to close a $30 million budget deficit.

Teachers find coaching helpful but most don’t get enough of it, survey says |
School staff who coach teachers to become better at their craft can be one approach to improving student outcomes, but few coaches have the time and administrative support to do their jobs effectively, a new survey finds.
A large number of teacher coaches surveyed say they oversee at least 16 teachers, more than the recommended 10 teachers per coach. And while teachers report finding value in receiving biweekly coaching, most see their coaches less frequently and in shorter durations than teachers would like.
